Erie County (PA). A person convicted of a crime pays his or her debt to society by serving a sentence, especially through incarceration. Far too often, however, the score between offender and society is not settled upon the offender’s release from prison. Instead, due to a criminal record and a lack of a social safety net, too many ex-offenders face a lifetime of repercussions from criminal acts for which they have already paid the price. Employers willing to hire them might be hard to come by. Bonds with family and friends might be lost either by virtue of the past criminal conduct or simply the long separation.
